About me

My name is Ema Horn and I am a Tokyo based choral director and music teacher. My musical path started when I started singing in a children’s choir and playing piano at the age of six. Since then, my life has revolved around music. I have been listening, reading, watching performances, occasionally writing and arranging and performing myself.

Although I always loved playing piano and learning other instruments, singing has always been my favorite. A place where I felt home.

During my schooling I was always involved in music, especially singing. I sang in choirs, chambers groups, bands and created my own little vocal group in high school. Throughout this time I realized that I feel best when with music and so I knew that it would always be a part of my life.

After receiving my masters in Musicology in Slovenia, I got the opportunity to teach music and be a choir director director at an International School in Ljubljana.

Since then, I have traveled to many different places, worked in Kazakhstan and moved to Japan in 2017 where I still live and teach today!

I have been a music teacher and choral director for 8 years now and I love it more than ever.

I find love and passion in conducting choirs of all ages (Tokyo International Children’s Choir, Middle, High School Choir and Vocal Ensemble at my current school). I find inspiration in working at festivals (KPASS Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festival) and being a clinician (KPASS Children’s Choir Festival). I grow my horizons by taking my choirs to national and regional festivals (KPASS Middle and High School Choir Festival) and overseas competitions (International Choir competition Maastricht, Netherlands). I  pass my knowledge onto my singers in private (in-person and online) vocal lessons.

The last year has been especially challenging for the music world but learning new tools and technology has helped me and my students to continue with our rehearsals, creating meaningful virtual performances and delivering singing lessons.

Teaching music, singing and conducting choirs is my passion and purpose in life!
